Ultimate Frisbee Guide
Ultimate involves two teams, usually of 7 people each, on a soccer or football field. The object of Ultimate is to throw a flying disc to your teammates, advancing it into your opponents' end zone, not unlike football or rugby. However, unlike either football or rugby, players cannot run while in possession of the disc but can only pivot in place until they throw the disc.. It is also a non-contact sport. Ultimate is often called "Ultimate Frisbee"; though this is a monomer as Frisbee is a registered trademark of Wham-O and merely refers to a particular make of flying disc. Some other popular companies are DisCraft and Daredevil Discs. Innova also makes discs for Ultimate and Disc Golf. For Ultimate, the weight is what is important and should be 175g.
The sport combines athleticism in the form of running, jumping, and coordination, and sportsmanship in that it does not use referees but relies on the Spirit of The Game. That is, play is governed by the participants. As the sport is non-contact, equipment requirements are minimal, though cleats are recommended for play on grass. Footwear is a question of personal preference. Soccer cleats provide a lightweight boot while football cleats give support and have a toe-cleat to help acceleration.
