Steamers

Steaming food is the way to go, especially if you're a health-conscious individual. This high-heat, low-fat method of cooking is the best way to preserve nutrients while cooking. So if you're trying to eat better, get yourself a steamer  and steam up veggies, eggs, seafood, poultry, beans, or anything else you can think of! They usually work well for reheating food as well. Keep in mind that electronic steamers  can double as rice cookers, and vice versa.

Classic vs. Modern
  • These steamers are the classic kind that fold down for easy storage.
  • Set them into a pot of boiling water, put whatever you want inside, throw a lid on top and you're good to go.
  • The kind of steamer you need depends on what you usually cook:
    • If you like steaming larger vegetables, look for one without a center post.
    • For tall veggies (like ears of corn) look for a vertical steamer which is taller and narrower than most pots.
    • For seafood look for large seafood steaming pots some of which have a special spout for draining broth after steaming.
  • If you buy a separate steamer for a pot you already own, find one with a good handle to make extracting the steamer from the pot easy.
  • These electronic steamers prepares food fast with the convenience of modern living.
  • Most models have a "scenter screen" that allow you to spice up food with herbs and spices.
  • Some have dividers, so you can steam 2 or more different kinds of food at one time.
  • Both Black & Decker and Oster brands got great reviews.
