Walking down the street, you spot a priest by the black suit, a cop by the blues, and a soccer fan -- that devotee who, in the best of cases, is, too, willing to risk life or limb for his affiliation -- by the jersey. The popularity of soccer (or football, as it is called outside the U.S.) worldwide is such that geography and nationality are often the least of considerations. It seems hardly unusual to find a kid in South Africa sporting the shirt of the Spanish Real Madrid squad. That said, the choice of jersey is not an arbitrary or frivolous game, like drawing lots. It's a fixed taking of sides! The proverbial drawing of a line in the sand! A declaration of allegiance! And -- in many, many cases -- of fashion sense.

To be honest, MLS is not the most popular league.
