PSP Games

While short on platform-exclusive games, there's no denying that the PSP is a formidable machine. This despite the fact that most of its titles are slimmed-down versions of titles already available on the handheld's big brother, the PlayStation 2.  There's something to be said for taking over the mobbed-up streets of Liberty City while sitting in the post office, or plugging through multiplayer SOCOM missions while waiting at the airport. The PSP's game load is impressive enough to make you not care so much that it can also play films and music.

Pretty Special Programs -- The Best of PSP Games

Daxter : Fans of the adventurous Jak franchise should enjoy this spinoff, in which eternal sidekick Daxter gets to branch out and go off on a quest of his own. Get past the stiff loading times and you'll have a load of fun with this one.	Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror : Expanding on the secret-ops Splinter Cell vibe, this shooter puts you in the silent shoes of a covert military dude who sneaks around, shoots people and saves the world. He doesn't do dishes, though.	SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo : Sticking to true SOCOM tradition, the single-player mode in this military shooter is doggie kibble, while the online action is filet mignon. Even the tepid single-player mode is more fun than the movie Navy SEALs, though.	FIFA 06:  In a World Cup year, this soccer game is an essential. No knee socks or riot gear necessary.

MLB '06: The Show : Just like the PlayStation 2 counterpart, the PSP version of the Show puts you in the game like no other baseball title out there. The home run derby is a personal favorite.	Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories : If you buy only one game for your PSP, make it this minidisc of bloody brilliance. The M rating puts this sucker out of reach of youngsters, but for those old enough to smoke and join the military, GTA is the only way to fly. Take over Liberty City as a mafioso and look good doing it.	Mega Man Powered Up : Remember the original Mega Man game? Imagine it supersized and juiced up graphically, with all sorts of additional features and playable end bosses, and that's what you get in Powered Up. Play the game or Mega Man himself will hide under your bed at night and shoot you with a stun beam once you wake up.	X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse : Sure, this comic book-themed role-playing/adventure hybrid is also available on nearly every other current console, but the PSP is the only one you can take into the bathroom with you. Win!

Me and My Katamari : Nothing beats taking a giant ball of madness and rolling it around zany stages, enveloping myriad objects and creatures that stand in your way. Silly, not entirely mindless fun, Katamari is also very, very Japanese.	Metal Gear Acid 2 : If you thought modern card games were restricted to variations on poker, look again. This Pokemon-like battle game has you arrange attack card decks in strategic fashion, then manipulate your way to victory on the battlefield. This is one to go all in on.	Lumines : The PSP's answer to Tetris is this deceptively simple puzzler. While jamming to a smooth soundtrack, you solve puzzles by busting blocks as quickly as possible. More addictive than American Idol.	The Lord of the Rings: Tactics : What seems like the 4 billionth LOTR game to hit shelves manages to stand apart from the pack by focusing on strategic planning and gamesmanship rather than all-out hacking and button-mashing. Guide the forces of light to victory over Mordor and you'll win yourself lots of happy Hobbit pals.	Infected : The thing about zombie viruses is they're not conducive to peaceful, low-key living. On the other hand, they make for some interesting shoot-em-up video games. Luckily no one buys a PSP for peaceful, low-key living.
