Magnifying Lenses

Magnifying lenses  are useful for seeing lots of different things up close, such as telephone directories, maps, text and images. When your eyesight isn't quite as good as it used to be or when you need to see things up close, a magnifying glass can help reduce eye strain. They can even be used to start fires. Kids can also enjoy having a magnifying lens to enhance their science and investigative skills by examining insects, leaves, and stones. Make sure to opt for an unbreakable magnifying lens though so that the children can't injure themselves.

Handheld magnifying lenses  aren't as precise as a loupe nor can they magnify to the same dimensions, however, they are inexpensive and perfect for home use. The best bet for a home magnifier is to find one that is scratch resistant.

The main feature to look for is magnification power -- the bigger the better. You will see magnifying lenses advertised as having 4X or 2X magnification, for example. The higher the number, the larger you can make the image that you are viewing. 2X is usually pretty standard for reading, but if you want to see other things, go a little higher. You may also be concerned with the lens size. A very small lens isn't as handy sometimes as having a wide field range.

Magnifying Lens Types

  • For magnification on the go, take along a bar magnifier It's small, discreet, and perfect for reading. Or try a pocket magnifier  that comes in a protective case so that it won't scratch.
  • For reading or seeing items in dark places, such as in the car or while hiking, go for a lighted magnifying lens
  • Large newspapers, documents, or maps may be easier to read with a flat magnifier  that enables viewing large magnified areas.
  • Women may enjoy the inconspicuous pendant magnifier  that looks like jewelry.
  • For older people looking for an easier way to read, try a stand up or clip on lamp with an integrated lighted magnifying glass. Dazor  and Giraffe  are two manufacturers that make magnifying lamps
