Minimum Age to Rent a Car

  • The minimum age to rent a car in the United States varies by state and by company.
  • In most places, you need to be 25 or older to rent a car.
  • Some companies may allow you to rent if you are over 18 or 21, depending on the location. However, there may be a surcharge for younger drivers.

      • Please note: although the Hertz page requires you to put in a location before determining your age eligibility, it doesn't change as long as you are renting in the United States; therefore, the example (Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport) applies to all situations in the US.

      • Enterprise does not appear to have a page on this; however, based on their front page, they appear to rent to drivers 18 and up, depending on location and with a surcharge.
    • Dollar
  • It is not always clear on a company's Web page what their policy is. Try searching for the FAQ or their rental policy.
